"Comic" Opera

There is no such thing as a comic opera. There is such a thing as an opera with funny tidbits but not a comic opera. A slightly funny opera in English has to be a million times better than an opera where the love-lorn characters both die of tuberculosis in Italian though.

I saw the HMS Pinafore today which my grandma wanted to see, so she dragged my mom along and I ended up going too. It takes place in 19th century England on the HMS Pinafore. Basically, Josefine is the capitans daughter, and she loves Ralph, a sailor. Ralph loves her too, but when he tells her, she declines because of their differene in class. Ralph almost kills himself when Josefine tells him she loves him, which ticks off her father, the capitan, who wants her to marry the Commander of the Navy, who's like three times older than her.

Then Buttercup, who is a fortune teller of sorts (and loves the capitan), tells everyone that when she was babysitting the capitan and Ralph, she got them mixed up, so Ralph is actually at the same class as Josefine, so then they get married and Buttercup marries the ex-capitan, and the Commander of the Navy marries his cousin.

Essentially, Josefine marries to Ralph, who is as old as her father, Buttercup marries the ex-capitan, who she babysat, and the Commander of the Navy marries his cousin, who was already related to him.

Ick.
